Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is recycling?

Using discarded items as raw material for new products. For instance: Melting soda cans to make new soda cans or making new newspapers from old newspapers.

Why recycle?

Keeping resources out of the waste stream protects our environment. Recycling saves energy and natural resources by decreasing demand on virgin resources and lessening pollution. If you make new paper from old paper, you don't have to go to the forest to get the raw material. If you make new cans from old cans, you don't have to dig a mine to get the raw material.

Who is the JMU recycling program?

We are the staff that moves everything JMU discards to the right place. Trash to the landfill and incinerator, recyclables to reprocessors.

Why does JMU care about recycling?

We can make houses and paper and boats out of many different materials, but we cannot replace the shelter that wild forests provide for biodiversity, or somehow duplicate their role in stabilizing our climate, or do without the water they provide that makes agriculture possible.

Where can you drop material off to be recycled?

Recycling bins located in residence halls, near trash rooms or vending areas, and academic or administrative buildings, near major corridors, offices, or vending areas.
