Handling of Material
Paper
View Handling Process
- Recyclable paper is gathered in offices and dorm areas recycling areas all over campus.
- Paper that is transported from buildings is sorted into different grades on our conveyor at the recycling center.
- Paper is then transported from sorting line to the 40 yard paper roll off to be hauled away.
- The paper is then taken to the paper processing plant.
Used Beverage Containers
View Handling Process
- USB containers originate in classroom bins, dorm bins, and outdoor cans.
- We collect material from all campus buildings and outdoor cans, directly or with assistance from housekeeping.
- We empty our material into City of Harrisonburg recycling trucks.
- The material is taken to the city's material recovery facility.
- "Volunteers" from the county jail sort the material into different grades of recyclable material to be sent
to a processing plant.
Cardboard
View Handling Process
- We collect cardboard material from all university buildings with a rear load paper truck and pickup truck.
- The material goes to Dave's recycling on High street.
Old Corrugated Containers
View Handling Process
- Loose OCC pays $20 per ton while saving $50 avoiding dumping fees.
- JMU saves $70 for every ton of OCC recycled.
- August 2000 JMU recycled 59,435 lbs. of loose cardboard.
- Environmentally, saved 510 trees; 210,000 gallons of water; 123,000 kilowatt hours of energy; and 90 cubic yards of
landfill space.
Scrap Metal
View Handling Process
- We sort scrap metal extracted from various buildings into three grades to obtain higher revenue.
- Copper, Aluminum, and Stainless Steel
- Aluminum pays $.28 per pound.
- Copper 1 and 2 mix pays at $.45 per pound.
- Stainless steel pays $.10 per pound.
- Low grade, bulk scrap metal is collected in roll off dumpster to be hauled to Staunton for reprocessing.
- Average weight is 2.5 tons saving $125 per pull.
Fluorescent Light Bulbs
View Handling Process
- Utilities department collects used bulbs during summer changes and as bulbs go bad druing the year.
- Bulbs are split into three recyclable products.
- We box the bad bulbs to be shipped to USA Lights for mercury extraction.
- Cost for JMU: 4ft bulbs = $.28 U-shape = $.48 HID = $1.25 per bulb.
